If you watch the news, you are very aware that we have a financial situation brewing right now….the Fiscal Cliff. While you may or may not think it affects your family, it might well affect your nonprofit Down syndrome organization. In a Wall Street Journal articlethat ran this past weekend, the writers reported a “mad scramble” among wealthy Americans to maximize their charitable contributions before they no longer have that option. While a complete elimination of that aspect of the tax code is unlikely (according to the president), the possibility has made many charitable organizations ramp up their collection efforts as the year end nears.
The National Council of Nonprofits (NCN) says it’s more than a single threat…it’s two-pronged. Along with capping donations (which is of itself enough to make us all stop and take notice), NCN warns of spending cuts putting more pressure on nonprofits by increasing the demands made on them due to cuts in other services. Now, this may or may not apply to our affiliates, but it is definitely something to keep in mind as you sit in front of your morning news show sipping your coffee tomorrow morning.
I’m a die-hard news junkie. I was a political science minor and a history major. It’s my cup of tea. But for many, it may not be on your front burner. My suggestion…push the skillet and the pot of beans to the back of the stove and find someone in your organization to learn more about this very important topic NOW. How, you say? Well, I’ve got that covered as well.
BoardSource has announced a FREE webinar this Wednesday with Tim Delaney, president and CEO of the National Council of Nonprofits, to learn how the fiscal cliff’s scheduled cuts and proposed caps represent twin threats to the work of nonprofits serving individual Americans and local communities. The Fiscal Cliff’s Twin Threats Against the Work of Charities is scheduled for Wednesday, December 12th at 3:30 pm Eastern.
What else can you do? Pass this blog along to other leaders in your group, to other DS organizations, to other nonprofit organizations within your community.
